Things to Consider In Getting Your Own Treadmill

Everyone is very familiar with a treadmill. This machine enhances the common forms of exercises like walking, jogging and running. It is widely use in a lot of different exercise routines. It can be used for warm ups and cooling down and is known to be effective in weight loss as well. Being often incorporated to our daily workout routines, a treadmill is a good investment as part of your home gym equipment. Here are some details you would have to consider if you are planning on getting one for your own home.

A treadmill can cost up to 3000 USD, but you can get a good treadmill with great features at 1000 USD. Determine on what you are planning on using the treadmill for. In doing this you can gauge the amount of intensity that will be applied against the machine so it is best to consider one that would be built to last. For example, a beginner can start with walking and jogging for about 5 times a week. You need not purchase a high end machine to be able to provide you the work out you need. Determine the weight capacity of the machine. Determine the strength of the motor. Take into account that other members in the family can use this too and determine the level of intensity they would require. Treadmills can be used by the elderly and are even suitable for kids.

Treadmills today have been ergonomically designed to be more effective machines. Check the features. You can find treadmills with a built-in heart rate monitor, calorie counter. Some treadmills are able to determine your weight and would be able to monitor your heart using sensors on the handles or monitor that you can attach to your chest. You can also consider getting one with built in programs that automatically increases your speed gradually and cools you down. Some machine would also have incline adjustments. Some fancier machines would have cup holders, built-in fans and can even play music.

Consider your safety. Check the stability and the frame. There are treadmills with adjustable incline or specially designed running pads to reduce the impact of running as the stress that your body absorbs can be up to 3 times your body weight. Consider getting treadmills with emergency brakes in cases of fatigue. There are auto-stop functions that would activate in case you slip or fall. Consider its durability. Make sure that the treadmill would last as you progress with your workout routines. You can get good machines by adding a few hundred dollars more. You make be jogging today but you might want to start running in a month or so. So make sure your treadmill will be able to progress to the next level as you so. So make sure to get a warranty.

Consider your space. Some treadmills are compact and do not take much space. Some can be folded up and be rolled away for easy storage. Finally, before taking it home, take it for a test run! Make sure you test your equipment. This would allow you to gauge if the design works for you. If you are tall, you would need to get a longer running belt.

Most importantly, before considering what to get, make sure you have raised this concern to your physician. There can provide you professional advice on what really suits you and from there you would have better knowledge in determining which healthy decisions would be great for you.

How To Get Rid Of Tattoos

Many people have tattoos and eventually people want to get them removed. Laser tattoo removal is a way to get rid of tattoos. Other options such as intense pulsed light therapy and over the counter creams are also available. Many people try these options first because they are less painful. Laser tattoo removal has been proven to be the most effective. Anyone can benefit from laser tattoo removal simply because removal techniques can be suited to treat each case. Doctors try to suit the removal process for the individual in order to reduce scarring. In some cases patients that were treated previously and experienced scarring because of it can also be candidates for laser tattoo removal.

Laser tattoo removal works by breaking up the pigments of color in a tattoo. The high intensity light beam is put over the tattoo and it is slowly removed. During laser surgery there are certain thing to generally expect. Although treatment varies from person to person here are the normal occurrences that happen during laser tattoo removal:

-Protective eye shields are used to protect the doctor and patient.

-A test is done to see if the patients skin reacts correctly to the laser.

-Laser tattoo removal is done by placing a hand piece onto the skin and activating the laser.

-An ice pack is applied to the area immediately after treatment followed by a topical antibiotic cream and a covering will be applied to protect the skin.

Like any procedure there are factors that decide whether or not the treatment is effective or not. The age of the tattoo as well as the size, colors and the patients skin color also decides on whether treatment is effective. Larger tattoo will take longer to remove. Black is also the easiest color to remove. Brighter colors require several treatments.

Laser tattoo removal does have side effects as do other procedures. Side effects and/or risks of this procedure include:

-Risk of infection

-Permanent scarring

-Lack of complete pigment removal (especially harder to remove colors)

-Hyper pigmentation

-Darkening of the tattoo

Overall laser tattoo removal is a great procedure for those who want to get rid of an unwanted tattoo. The overall procedure is done by a cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist and is very effective. Discomfort is part of the procedure and side effects may occur but if it is done by a well trained doctor it is less of a risk and they know how to correct some of these problems. Numerous treatments may be needed in order to completely remove the tattoo but it will eventually be completely gone. Be sure to properly care for the area once treatment is done. If laser is not for you, other options can always be explored.

How to Paint People With Acrylic

Acrylics is the most versatile of paints for fine art. There are many attributes of acrylic paints that make it my choice of paint. There are 3 main advantages of acrylic paints to oil paints and watercolors.

1. Varied Viscosity and Textures

Acrylics can be purchased with different levels of viscosity. This allows the artist to apply color using infinite choice of different techniques. One can apply the impasto technique by slapping on thick globs of paint on the support, or choose to thin the paint with water and make color wash like watercolor.

Acrylics have strong molecular bonds. The material is tacky and stretchable. This makes is possible to be mixed with solid granular or fibrous material to create interesting textures.

2. Different supports

The molecular structure mentioned above allows the paint to stick well to any thickness of material, from paper to wood or even metal, as long as the surface is not totally smooth.

3. Quick Drying

Quick drying paint is a boon to artists who paint layer on layer. Layering is not easy with oils because they take long to dry between layers. Watercolors are not color fast. Layering with watercolors is tricky since the paint is not color-fast. Layering of watercolors lead to bleeding and smudging of the under layer if one is not patient enough.

Within the scope of this article, I shall explain more of painting, as in applying color and not so much on drawing.

Skin Tones and Realism

Contrary to what many art teachers subscribe to, I do not believe there is such a thing as a formula for the color palette. One can use any combination of colors to create paintings of the human figure. I personally, use a very limited palette of not more than 2 colors plus black and white to paint people. The colors used should reflect the artist’s own painting style, and also the tone of the subject matter.

The use of black is actually optional. Some artists do not use black, but rather mix two complementary colors to produce a dark. One great mix would be Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine. However, one can also use Cerulean Blue instead of Ultramarine for a more ‘realistic’ skin undertone.

For eyes, hair and lips, when trying to achieve realism, less is often more. Keep the color of these features muted if unsure. The exception is, of course, when the intention is to exaggerate these feature.

Clothes and Accessories

Clothes and accessories make paintings interesting. If possible, try to paint these last after painting the complete figure. I tend to use the figures as the support for these accessories.

Different Physical Techniques For Painting People With Acrylics

Creating art is free. There are so many ways to apply acrylic paint. Here are 4 broad techniques one can explore.

1. Color Washing

This method is similar to watercolor painting, except that one can use this method to paint on paper or canvas. Use the most fluid Acrylic paint, and thin it with water. The best results are obtained when the paint is really watery-thin. Paint from the highlights and darken as you go. The way to darken the tones is to wait for each thin layer to dry and then paint another thin layer over.

The more layers, the more control one will have on the skin tones. Start with the lighter skin tones like the yellow highlights and gradually add the burnt sienna, and the blue tones for shadow.

The idea for this style is to keep the colors loose and free.

2. Impasto

This techniques looks best on sturdy medium like stretched canvas and wood. It will not look so stable on paper. Visualize the famous portraits of Vincent van Gogh. The paint is thickly applied as if it was just squeezed out of the tube. Acrylic paints look like oil paint when applied this way. Buy paint which has high viscosity. If you need thicker texture, add acrylic gel medium. Apply the colors each stroke next to each other until the canvas is covered. While painting skin tones, most artists applying this technique would paint the darks first. This is because you want the highlights to appear on top of the surface. Hence, start with the shadows.

Extent of realism in this technique depends on the size of the brush strokes and the thickness of the paint. More realism is generally achieved by smaller strokes and less viscous paint.

3. Layering

This is the technique I use most in my present portfolio. The idea is somewhat in between the first two techniques. Use paint of varying viscosity. For lighter areas of the body, use paint thinned with water, and for areas which are darker of less detailed use slightly thicker paint.

For more control on realism, use thin layers. One can also adopt this technique called “Grisaille” method where the first under-painting is monotone to block in the shades.

4. Collage Techniques

Very popular with abstraction painters, and many artists today. This technique is not so much about painting with the traditional brush. The versatility of the paint allows us to mix and stick objects to the paint and onto the support. One can, use these objects under the paint or on top of the paint. Either way, there will be infinite possibility of textures and styles. Normally, realism in painting the human figure is not priority with this style.

Getting that X-factor in a painting

Human figures are the most interesting subjects to have in a painting. Even a landscape, a tiny figure of a person becomes the focal point. We are always drawn to body language. That is why I find it easy to communicate with art by painting people.

In order to add more drama, more expression in a figure painting, one can try experimenting on lighting, foreshortening, composition and clever use of color and brushstrokes.

The possibilities of painting people with acrylics are endless. An ultimate painting of the human figure can speak volumes and express a whole lot.

The Proper Use of Antibiotics

The word antibiotic means “against life” and these medications are intended to be used to get rid of the bacterial form of life. Antibiotics are ineffective against viruses.

The proper way to ensure that the bacteria is totally eliminated is summarized here:

1. Take your temperature before your first dose of antibiotic. Get a piece of paper or notebook to track the date, time and temperature.

2. Take your temperature again 1 hour and 6 hours after your first dose. Write these down.

3. Take your temperature again 1 hour after each dose and write these readings down (again with date, time and temperature.)

3. If after 24 hours your temperature has not dropped to 97i?°F or below, call us and let your prescribing doctor know. Your antibiotic will need to either be changed or the dosage increased depending on what your temperature has been doing.

4. Be sure that you continue to track your temperature. You will continue on the antibiotic until your temperature comes back up to normal (near 98.6i?°F) even though you are continuing the antibiotic.

5. You may need a refill on the antibiotic if the temperature is still low and you have run out of the prescription.

IMPORTANT: Do not stop taking the antibiotic until the temperature comes back up to normal, even if you feel better. If you stop too soon, all of the bacterial will not have been killed and the infection will return.

SIDE EFFECTS OF ANTIBIOTICS:

Like any other medication there can be side effects. Below are the most common side effects and what to do to relieve them.

1. Stomach upset. This can be caused because the antibiotic is killing off the good bacteria in the digestive tract along with the “bad” bacteria. The solution for this is to put the good bacteria back into your intestines by eating yogurt with live probiotic cultures. Probiotic means “supporting life.” Probiotics are also available in liquid, capsule or pill form. These may also go by the name of “acidophilus” or other culture name. Continue to take these for a few weeks after you have finished your antibiotics.

2. Persistent upset stomach, despite taking probiotics, is handled by taking B2 capsules. One capsule with each meal.

3. Sore gums. This is handled by taking 1000 mg Vitamin C twice a day until the symptoms go away.

4. Depression, nightmares, lethargy. This is handled by taking 100 to 500 mg B1 twice a day, depending on severity of symptoms. Stop taking the B1 once the symptoms subside.

5. Avoid dairy products that have hormones (use organic milk and cheese only) and meat or poultry that has been given hormones or antibiotics. These can make the side effects of your medication worse. Eat organically raised animal products or “free range” animal products.

Other recommendations:

Take a good multivitamin and multi-mineral daily, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, get enough protein daily and avoid fatty or fried foods.

Following these guidelines will ensure a full recovery from your ailment.

The Lottery Jinx – Or Is It Just An Irrational Superstition?

I’m going to win the lottery! I’m going to be rich!

Oh no, did I just jinx myself?

Do you ever say that to yourself? I mean, do you believe that saying that you will win the lottery places a jinx on yourself? Some people believe that if you say that you will win the lottery, then you won’t win it. So they believe that it’s better to just hope you win it, but never mention it out loud. Is their any rationality to this? Or is it just an irrational superstition?

Well, the definition of a jinx is a superstition that a person, thing, or influence which is supposed to bring bad luck. The key word here is “superstition.” By definition, a superstition is irrational.

Since a jinx is an irrational belief, it is just silly to think that saying out loud that you will win the lottery will cause you not to win it.

Don’t believe me? Well, let’s look at something in popular culture that has to do with jinxes. It is believed that if a professional athlete appears on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine, it will place a jinx on him, causing him to under-perform, never again reaching the level of performance that got him on the front cover of the magazine in the first place. The media perpetuates this myth by giving examples of athletes that appeared on the front cover of Sports Illustrated and then blew it. Here are a few examples that they use:

• New England Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady, appeared on the cover in September 2008. Then, in the first game of the season, he tore his ACL and MCL in his left knee.

• In April of 2010, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada of the New York Yankees appeared on the cover together. Within a week, Rivera, Petitte, and Posada suffered injuries and Jeter went on to have the worst season of his career.

There are tons more examples then this, which would lead some people to believe that jinxes really do exist. However, this sports jinx is merely something created by the media. There are even more examples of athletes that appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, but never had it affect their performance at all. This things don’t get reported by the media.

So what does this have to do with the supposed lottery jinx? It just goes to show that a jinx is something that is totally made up and, hence, an irrational superstition. It doesn’t matter if you say out loud that you will win the lottery. That alone won’t be the cause of you not winning it. The more likely explanation would be that you won’t win it because the odds are not in your favor. By design, only a very few people actually win the lottery. It has to do with luck and nothing else.

Tony Honoree Audra McDonald Continually Surprises

Vocalist Audra McDonald has always been adventurous. The recipient of more than 20 major honors, including three Tony Awards for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, two for Best Featured Actress in a Play and two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie, she surprises at every turn.

Like her frequent colleague, Dawn Upshaw, she champions new composers. Her touch of fairy dust launches them instantly. Among those whose songs now have a firm place in her repertoire are Adam Guettel, Gabriel Kahane, Michael John LaChiusa and Jason Robert Brown.

Even before she graduated from Juilliard in 1993, she was on tour in “Secret Garden”; within a year, she was on Broadway as Carrie Pipperidge in “Carousel.” Befitting the impact of that debut performance, she won her first Tony Award, a Theatre World Award and a Drama Desk Award. Her next Tony for Sarah in “Ragtime” was followed by one for “Marie Christine,” LaChiusa’s musical based on the Greek legend of Medea set in the Gay Nineties.

As a recording artist, McDonald appears on ten cast recordings and is featured on sixteen others ranging from a guest appearance with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to the 100th anniversary celebration of Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess.” Her four solo albums are a brilliant array of popular numbers from old and new composers. In “Build a Bridge,” the most recent, she journeys where least expected with bows to Kermit the Frog, Rufus Wainwright and Elvis Costello.

Eager to conquer new vistas, McDonald alternated musicals with serious drama and took home her first Tony for Best Featured Actress as Sharon in “Master Class.” She repeated that feat with “A Raisin in the Sun.” Her dramatic persona continued to thrive in the Lincoln Center production of Shakespeare’s “Henry IV” and on television. Until earlier this year, she played Dr. Naomi Bennett on ABC-TV’s “Private Practice.” Her arduous schedule got in the way, and no wonder.

Along with a solo performance at Carnegie Hall, she has been weaving concerts between the American Repertory Theater production of Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” that just received the green light for Broadway. Although she has appeared in several operas, among them Kurt Weill’s “The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahogany” for L.A. Opera and two solo one-act operas at Houston Grand Opera, the new “Porgy and Bess” may herald her future focus.

Her favorite aspect of this contemporary version is the fact that it goes back to DuBose Heyward’s book. He researched newspaper articles about Charleston during that period and drew Porgy from the story of a beggar around the town. This and other touches added from his original book enhance the characters.

“This Bess is different because it’s me, a filter of my own soul,” McDonald said. “I’m trying to understand her life as an addict and what someone goes through to defeat addiction.”

She likes the the new presentation of Porgy because it forces his handicap. In other productions, he was on his knees, but now he struggles to move and fight for independence. His handicap is something Bess doesn’t handle at first, but in the end, she drags or carries Porgy to the safe house.

Overcoming Fatigue – How to Overcome Being Tired All the Time

Tiredness and exhaustion are major players contributing to our overall well being. When we feel tired all the time, then our resources are soon depleted and our emotions can swing all over the place. There are many elements which contribute to maintaining healthy energy levels, most of which I am sure you are well aware of: getting enough sleep, feeling relaxed, eating a healthy diet with organic fruit and veg on a daily basis, drinking plenty of pure water, exercising etc etc. Sometimes energy levels are affected by illness such as hypothyroidism or ME, so if you are suffering from long term low energy, check with your doctor to see if there is a medical reason for your tiredness. What I want to share today is another possibility as to why you feel tired all the time.

We are part of the natural world, and in temperate climates we are well aware of the 4 seasons through the year and of the symbology associated with each season:

Spring: new life

Summer: high energy, abundance

Autumn: slowing down and harvest time

Winter: quiet stillness, dormancy

We are happy to relate the seasons to the activities of the animals around us: babies in springtime, and hibernation in winter. Everything works in a natural cycle, and yet, do we allow ourselves to be part of that natural cycle? There is expectation in our workplace and society that we should have abundant energy levels at all times. Yet this isn’t the case. We too have our seasonal adjustments and when we stop paying attention to our bodies we can end up becoming very depleted.

In practical terms, listen to what your body is telling you: it knows more about its needs than your mind! When I do this, I notice that by body rhythm is very much in tune with the seasons. Through the summer, I have lots of energy to work, to go out and enjoy the long evenings. As autumn approaches, I feel my body begin to change, the energy levels begin to slow down, and I feel myself wanting to go to bed earlier. I reap what I sow during the summer, gathering the resources to see me through the next few months. By winter, I am sleeping a lot more than in the summer. I go to bed earlier and sleep longer in the morning. I enjoy the stillness of winter, the turning inward and processing and assimilating all that happened that year. And by the time the snowdrops are poking their heads up above the earth I am beginning to awaken again, to begin thinking of the days lengthening so that when the daffodils are dancing, I am back out in the sunshine, walking and ready to take on new things in my life, filled with exhilaration, energy and excitement for what the year ahead will bring.

When we honour ourselves by listening to our natural energy levels in this way, we find ourselves resourced for the whole year. When we plow on regardless of what our body is saying because we are feeling pressured to achieve something (either for ourselves or for someone else), that’s when we get tired. Winter is the time for stillness. If we start new projects at this time, we will have a tough journey ahead. New projects take a lot of energy and our bodies are wanting to slow down. If we push through this, then we will find that we aren’t resourced enough by the time it comes to spring, and it can take months to catch up energetically just because we didn’t rest enough for a few weeks.

Where there are so many external expectations of us it can be difficult to truly honour ourselves. What I would recommend is that during the autumn and winter months only focus on what absolutely must be done. Use your personal time for resourcing yourself and manage your personal time so that it does fit with your natural body rhythm.

If you are finding that you are already exhausted, then simply start paying attention to your body and begin working at your own pace. It may take a while to feel fully resourced again, and if you begin the process today, then you will soon begin to see the benefits. As you pay attention to your body rhythms, then you will automatically become more aware of them, and each year you are likely to see that your own body rhythm is more and more alighed with the seasons where you live.

Bacterial Vaginosis Symptoms Are Easy To Diagnose

If you are wondering what exactly are the bacterial vaginosis symptoms that do not indicate something more serious like and STD; you are in the right place. We will be going over the only bacterial symptoms that you will be experiencing if you have this most embarrassing and uncomfortable infection. You can then get a safe BV cure that you can get from your local grocery store.

Before we go into bacterial vaginosis symptoms I have to let you know that it is very important for women everywhere to make regular visits to their gynecologist. This is absolutely essential for you to keep a very healthy and happy life. A gynecologist will be able to take a swab from inside the vaginal wall and tell you 100% what kind of infections you may or may not have.

With that being said, I have a personal understanding of how embarrassing it is to go to your gynecologist when you have bacterial vaginosis symptoms such as an itchy vagina, fishy vaginal odor and a yellow or white discharge. That is why I have created this article. It is my intention that no woman have to suffer the embarrassment of an extremely unpleasant doctor visit again.

So, what are the bacterial vaginosis symptoms?

The bacterial vaginosis symptoms that are not indicative of an STD are an itchy vagina, fishy vaginal odor and a yellow or white discharge. That is it. If you have symptoms such as erythema (redness of the skin), pain, burning or anything other than a fishy vaginal odor, yellow or white discharge and an itchy vagina; you probably have something that can be more serious like an STD. Many women only experience the fishy vaginal odor and white discharge without the itchy vagina. The important thing is that you do not have more visual problems.

Now, after you have successfully identified the only bacterial vaginosis symptoms that are included here you need to get a natural BV cure that works. I know from experience that the BV cure that they give you at the doctor does not work. That is a discussion for another article. If you search for any kind of treatment online you will get many natural home remedies that will work to eliminate your problem for good. You can then visit your gynecologist with a smile on your face because you no longer have the embarrassing bacterial vaginosis symptoms like the itchy vagina, fishy vaginal odor and white discharge.

Acid Reflux or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Treatment

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), or Acid Reflux, is the reflux of gastric acid to the esophagus. It can be treated using lifestyle and diet modification, medications, and surgery.

Lifestyle modification is the simplest management for patients with GERD. This management primarily focuses on changing the eating habit of the person. Since GERD is more injurious during bedtime, it is highly recommended for patients with GERD to elevate the head of the bed when sleeping. This is because when lying down, gravity does not oppose reflux compared to that when sitting upright or standing.

Lifestyle modification is paired with diet modification in the management of GERD. Reflux usually occurs after meals when the stomach is distended with food. That is why, for GERD patients, small and frequent meals are highly recommended. Since some foods worsen GERD symptoms, there are also diet restrictions for patients with GERD. These are chocolates, peppermints, alcoholic beverages, spicy foods, and caffeinated drinks. Acid-containing foods such as citrus and tomato juices and also carbonated beverages are avoided. It is also recommended for GERD patients to chew gum because it stimulates the production of bicarbonate-containing saliva and increases the rate of swallowing, neutralizing the acid in the esophagus.

There are a lot of medications used for GERD, such as antacids, histamine antagonists, proton pump inhibitors, pro-motility drugs, and foam barriers. But, the medication of choice for GERD is antacid. It neutralizes the gastric acid preventing acid reflux. It is taken one hour after meals preventing the occurrence of GERD symptoms. Calcium-based antacids stimulate the release of gastrin which is responsible for the stimulation of acid secretion. Hence, its side effect is acid rebound. Although it is not clinically significant, acid rebound is believed to be harmful to GERD patients. Aluminum-containing antacids can cause constipation, while magnesium-containing antacids cause diarrhea. These two types of antacids can be used alternately to relieve constipation and diarrhea in GERD patients.

Fundoplication is a surgical procedure used to prevent reflux. Any hiatal hernia is pulled below the diaphragm and the opening in the diaphragm is tightened around the esophagus. The upper part of the stomach is wrapped around the esophagus making an artificial lower esophageal sphincter (LES). This procedure is done through incising the abdomen (laparotomy); or using a technique called Laparoscopy where a small scope and surgical instruments are passed through puncture sites in the abdomen. Surgery is effective in relieving GERD symptoms and treating GERD complications. However, GERD patients who have undergone surgery are still advised to continue taking medications for GERD.

Physiotherapy – What Is It?

Physiotherapy is therapy which promotes movement and reduces pain. In the United States, the term physical therapy is used. Physiotherapists are health professionals who have attended university for several years. Some physiotherapists have a bachelor of science, but now most physiotherapists graduate with a masters degree. Some schools offer clinical doctorates in physiotherapy.

The scope of physiotherapy is wide, involving the musculoskeletal, respiratory, and nervous systems. If you have had a serious fracture or severe asthma, or had a heart attack or stroke, you will be seen by a physiotherapist in the hospital. If you have neck pain or a sports injury, you will see a physiotherapist in a clinic. CanE?t leave the home, due to disability or trouble getting around? Call a physiotherapist who does home visits. What techniques does a physiotherapist use to restore movement? After a total joint replacement, your knee will be stiff and painful, and it will be hard to walk. Your physiotherapist will show you how to walk with a cane, will teach you exercises to strengthen, and do hands on stretching to regain range of motion. If you wrenched your back, the physiotherapist will move the facet joints using the hands to position and pull, or will crack your back if needed. If you have rheumatoid arthritis, the physiotherapist will teach you how to protect your joints, and might apply laser, ultrasound, or electrical devices to reduce pain and swelling.

In the hospital, physiotherapists work in burn units, in cardiac rehabilitation, spinal cord and brain injury care, intensive care, and pediatrics. They are an integral part of the medical team, which includes doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and psychologists. On the sports field, physiotherapists attend to acute injuries, teach conditioning and injury prevention programs, and tape injured joints. In universities, physiotherapists research clinical problems, to contribute to the literature of best practices for optimal care. In schools, they assess and treat children with special needs. In industry, they give ergonomic advice, such as how to set up a computer station to enhance good posture, and they test functional work capacity, such as how much an injured worker can lift.

Physiotherapy ranks as one of the highest professions in job satisfaction. To be successful in the profession, a physiotherapist must enjoy learning. The science of the human body expands rapidly, so effort is needed to keep up with the newest research. A good sense of humour is an asset, because when dealing with people having challenging physical problems, funny situations arise and client and therapist often laugh together. Because the profession is so broad, most practitioners will specialize in a setting or an area of clinical interest, for example neurology or orthopedics. The common thread to all areas of physiotherapy is knowing how the body functions, and helping people move well.
